Hello

Writing about yourself is always weird.
So, until we have a chance to sit down and actually get to know each other, here are a few things I'd like to share with you.

How it all started …

In my early days around the age of 8, I was already obsessed with music. I listened to the radio all day long and bought my first records. I even tried to create my own radio show. Queen was my favorite band. More than that, they controlled my life.

This had to lead to a career in music and things started to explode when my dear mum bought me my first drum set at age 12.

Many bands and music degree from The Hague Royal Conservatory later, I discovered that there was an even better way to express what always had been inside me: sound engineering. I studied Recording Techniques and Music Technology at the same conservatory. The combination of music and technology fits me like a glove. Later, I realised that I also love this profession because I am fascinated by organisation, planning, psychology and creativity.

Sound engineering

As a Sound Engineer I have worked with many different artists in a very broad range of styles. From theatre to Rock'n Roll, from classical to world music, from television to corporate events. Of course, due to my musical background, a job with good music is what makes me smile the most.

First tour: Mutabaruka

Immediately after graduating music recording and jazz drums at the conservatory of The Hague, I got the chance to go on the road with Jamaican cult hero Mutabaruka: my first European tour.

Focus & Ampco

In a few years time I worked up to premium sound engineer at Focus and Ampco, the two largest sound rental companies in the Netherlands at that time.

Freek de Jonge

To amplify a voice the right way is an art in itself.
After years of working intensively with prominent comedian Freek de Jonge this part of the business no longer holds any secrets for me.

Joop van den Ende Theaterproducties

I was able to apply the vast experience I had acquired with Freek de Jonge to three large traveling musicals: My Fair Lady, Evita and West Side Story. These were very complex productions which demanded much technical knowledge and flexibility. I had already acquired most of my basic knowledge during my studies, in which the registration of classical instruments was an important part.

Zuco 103

I got to know Zuco 103 and was immediately and incredibly impressed by their sound and show. It was clearly for good reason that in those days, they were seen by the media as The Netherlands’ best live band. Therefore, it made me extra happy that the inventors of ‘Brazilectro’ asked me to go on a world tour with them. During six years, it brought me to places all over the globe: Europe, North and South America, Asia and Africa.

Within Temptation

In my youth, all that I loved musically was huge and overwhelming: Queen was top of my list. Much of the same feeling I found in Within Temptation. As the biggest selling musical export product from The Netherlands they used big productions in venues up to 20,000 visitors. No wonder I have been touring with them happily for fourteen years.

Sound design

As live music productions are getting more ambitious and complex, the need for proper sound design is more necassary than ever before. As a Sound Engineer I’m the natural link between client, artist and audience. I feel a great responsibility to give the best quality sound possible. By designing the sound setup I can go even further into fulfilling everyone’s needs and wishes. I have made sound designs for Within Temptation (3 world tours, 2 theatre tours and 2 performances with full orchestra), The Tina Turner Experience in the GelreDome stadium in Arnhem (The Netherlands), Elvis in Ahoy 2015, Scratch Muziekdagen with 900 piece choir and 85 piece orchestra, Hollands Hoop the location theatre version of famous TV hitserie a.o.

Analyze before you equalize

I’ m an early adapter of SMAART, one of the most widely used audio and acoustic measurement tools. After I was certified as SIM3 engineer (Meyer Sound), SMAART and I became good friends. It helps me in finding the true reasons for problems in acoustics, loudspeaker system setups and overall mixes. I am also excited about new tools that will show up in the future.

Let’s get virtual

Another major improvement in live audio engineering is the use of Virtual Soundcheck. By playing back last night's recorded performances on multitrack, without having the band present, I can work on the sound no matter what's happening on stage. The extra time this gives me to perfect the mix makes the show sound so much better; more detailed and open. And it’s fun!

On stage

Although less frequently than doing Front Of House sound, occasionaly I mix monitor sound for artists, clubs and festivals. I enjoy this a lot. I've mixed monitors for The Analogues, Paard van Troje, The Hague Jazz Festival, Waylon, Kraak & Smaak and Wende to name a few.

Also now and then I very much enjoy working as a Stage- or Production Manager during events like Viva Brasil, North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazz Mecca, Beach Pop etc.

Waves Live plugins

My latest fascination is Waves Audio plugins for live sound. A whole new world of technical possibilities is now within handreach. More than ever before we are able to bring studio technology to the live environment. Most bands have a couple of favourite sound effect tools in the studio to give them their signature sound. It is so cool to offer them the same tools when they play live!
